BackgroundBMP-4 is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family that is part of the transforming growth factorbeta superfamily. BMP-4 plays an important role in the onset of endochondral bone formation and a reduction in expression has been associated with a variety of bone diseases, including the heritable disorder Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (1). BMP-4 acts as a novel, noncytotoxic therapeutic effector that is used to prevent growth and recurrence of glioblastomas (2). Mouse BMP4 shares 98% homology with human BMP-4.
