BackgroundInterleukin 18: IL-18 is a cytokine that belongs to the IL-1 super family which function in immune response. IL-18 binds IL-18 receptor inducing cell-mediated immunity together with IL-12 during microbial infections (1). IL-18 can release Inferferon or type 2 interferon after stimulation of NK cells and certain T cells (2). IL-18 is also produced during chronic inflammation, various cancers and autoimmune diseases (3).
